Thank you for your inquiry regarding the CITI human subjects research educational modules.
The CITI human subjects research educational program consists of a Basic Course of 12 modules for
Biomedical investigators, 11 modules specifically prepared for
Investigators conducting Social / Behavioral research and 5 General Interest
modules. Each institution has the flexibility to set specific
curriculum requirements for specific subgroups of the target
audience.
- Multiple Learner Groups can be established to customize the course
according to the learners interests or role in human subjects research.
- Each module is focused on a different aspect of bio-ethics and human subjects research.
- Each module, developed by experts in the "IRB community" has an associated quiz.
- CITI updates the modules semi-annually.
The course is hosted on secure servers at the University of Miami
and the CITI office at the University of Miami retains all records in
strict confidence. When the user completes the required course
materials:
- The leaner can print / download a Completion Report that details the learners accomplishments.
- A copy of the Completion Report is e-mailed to the institutional key trainer or IRB administrator.
- The learner may complete a voluntary satisfaction survey.
- The learner may retain to the course site and download a copy of the completion report as needed.
- An administrator at each institution will have access to the CITI
Report Utilities to view the progress of an individual learner or to
download aggregate training data.
- The administrator also has access to the comments submitted by their learners about the course site.
The Institutional Page
Importantly, there is the opportunity for each participating institution to post specific materials on an "Institutional Page" that their own IRB's believe their faculty and
staff should know. The students/trainees can even be quizzed on this material if that is desirable.
Other Courses From The CITI Program
Although CITI is a not-for-profit organization, CITI does charge an
institutional user fee of $2500.00 per year per institution to offset
the administrative costs of running the course site. The fee also
includes the set up for your institutional page. There is no limit on
the number of people from your institution who may use the CITI course
site. The user fee includes institutional access to:
- The Basic Course for the Protection of Human Research Subjects.
- The CITI Refresher Courses.
- The Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Course.
- The Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) Course.
- The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course.

The content and quizzes are updated semi-annually.
CITI can get your institution set up and ready to go in a few days. All we need is:
- Full name of your institution as you want it displayed.
- A logo for your institution in JPG or GIF format (prepared on a PC).
- The Contact Information
(name, title, address, e-mail address, phone number, fax numbers) for
the person who will be responsible for handling questions from your
faculty and who will be receiving the training records.
- The information you would like on your institutional page.
(e.g., links, documents, policies and procedures for you institution
etc. We will put links to the Belmont report, the Declaration of
Helsinki and the OHRP document library as a matter of course. We also
will put a link to your web page and/or the training coordinator if you
like). This material can be changed or updated as necessary.
- A memo (e-mail is ok)
expressing your institution's intent to pay the $2,500 user fee for
year 1. We will bill you when your access has been established and your
institutional page has been activated.
